Going Green: How Green Tech Can Save You Over £37,000

The transition to clean energy has long been viewed as an environmental necessity, but new research reveals it’s also an opportunity to significantly improve your finances. According to a report by energy company Ovo, households investing in green technology could save an impressive £37,000 over 15 years, fundamentally changing how we should think about the economics of going green with our energy supply.

Which Renewable Systems Can Help?

The financial case for clean technology is more compelling than many realise. The report examines six key green measures: heat pumps, home insulation, solar panels, leased electric vehicles, home EV chargers, and smart meters.

While the initial investment might seem daunting at around £15,500 after incentives, the return on investment tells a remarkable story. Households can expect to break even within just five years, accumulating savings of approximately £17,600 by that milestone through reduced energy bills and lower running costs.

What makes these savings particularly attractive is their long-term advantages. The benefits compound over time as households enjoy reduced electricity bills from solar generation, lower heating costs from efficient heat pumps, improved home efficiency from insulation, and significantly cheaper running costs for electric vehicles compared to their petrol alternatives.

Even when accounting for inflation and borrowing costs, the net savings still exceed £23,000 over the 15-year period according to Ovo, demonstrating the robust financial foundation of green technology adoption.

What are the Challenges?

The path to these savings faces several obstacles. The research reveals that 72% of people cite upfront costs as their primary barrier to adopting green technology, with two-thirds needing to prioritise immediate financial needs over long-term gains.

This challenge is particularly acute for lower-income households, where 92% of those earning less than £30,000 annually view green technologies as financially out of reach. The irony is stark: those who would benefit most from long-term energy savings often can’t access the upfront capital required to achieve them.

The rental market presents another complex challenge in the green transition. A large percentage of private rental tenants feel trapped in energy-inefficient homes, caught in a system where landlords have little incentive to invest in improvements that will primarily benefit their tenants through lower bills. This creates a significant barrier to widespread adoption of clean technology, particularly in a rental market where many households have limited control over their living environment.

The research also highlights additional benefits beyond just finances. Energy-efficient homes typically see increased property values, reduced exposure to sudden market shocks from volatile fossil fuel prices, and improved daily comfort through better temperature control and reduced draughts. These quality-of-life improvements add another dimension to the value proposition of green technology investment.

Adapting for the Future

Policy responses are already emerging to address these challenges. The government has committed £13.2 billion to upgrade up to five million homes during this parliamentary term, while working with industry to develop financing models that could eliminate upfront costs entirely. However, experts argue that more comprehensive support is needed, including expanded grants, low-cost loans, and social tariffs to ensure vulnerable households aren’t left behind in the green transition.

For households considering the green transition, the message from this research is clear: while there is an upfront investment, the long-term financial benefits are even more significant. As the clean energy transition accelerates, those who can navigate the initial investment hurdle stand to benefit substantially, both financially and environmentally, over the coming decades.
