Your Questions, Answered
What is the average cost to install a boiler?
▼A simple ‘like for like’ boiler swap can cost as little as £1800 + VAT. However, this figure can increase if you are moving the boiler to another position, upgrading controls or changing from a standard boiler & cylinder to a combi boiler.
How do I know which boiler/fuel type is right for my home?
▼To choose the right boiler and fuel, firstly determine which fuel types are available in your area, as this is the most significant factor in your decision. If you live in an urban area you are likely to have access to mains gas and electricity, most rural areas have access to electricity and bottle gas (LPG), heating oil (kerosene) or solid fuel such as wood, coal or wood pellets. Of course, the modern approach is moving very much towards Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP’s) which can be installed in most homes. Then, consider your home's size and hot water demand to select the best boiler type (combi, system, or regular). Finally, factor in long-term costs, efficiency, and available space when making your final choice.
How long does a typical boiler installation take?
▼A simple ‘like for like’ boiler swap can take just one day and would normally include a simple water flush of the heating system. However, more complex boiler installations that may include a full system update or re-positioning will take longer. A boiler swap to an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) will likely take 7-10 days or more.
Do I need an electrician for a boiler install?
▼An electrician isn’t normally required when a simple boiler swap is taking place. However, this may change if you are moving the boiler to another position, upgrading controls or changing from a standard boiler & cylinder to a combi boiler. An electrician will be required if you upgrade your system to an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP)
Are there government grants or ECO schemes available?
▼Yes, you may be eligible for the governments Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) (England and Wales) for low carbon heating, or the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) which provides grants for energy efficiency measures including new boilers to eligible households on low incomes.
Are Air Source Heat Pumps suitable for any home?
▼Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP’s) can be installed into many homes / dwellings or offices, this has become more prevalent since the introduction of ASHP’s using the new R290 refrigerant, which allows for higher temperatures that are closer to that achieved from a condensing gas or oil boiler. It is important to select an installation company such as Village Heating, that can design a low temperature heating system and offer access to the £7500 government grant.
Aren’t Air Source Heat Pumps really inefficient in older and un-insulated homes?
▼Yes, Air Source Heat Pumps are less efficient on older and un-insulated homes, but so are gas boilers, oil boilers, electric radiators or biomass boilers. The key is to insulate as much as possible and then design the heating system to the heat losses of each room, insulating your home will improve the efficiency of any heating system fuel, including an Air Source Heat Pump.
Is gas the cheapest form of heating?
▼No, a well designed Air Source Heat Pump system on the correct electricity tariff can save you up to 40% on your heating bill when using standard electricity or a fossil fuel, combine this with a well-integrated solar PV array and battery storage, your heating system running costs averaged out through the year could be near zero.
Do you offer finance options or payment plans?
▼No, if you are looking to finance the boiler installation we would advise you seek professional advice from your bank or building society. Quite often, personal loans or a change to your mortgage might offer better interest rates and prove to be a better financial decision.
What warranty comes with a new boiler?
▼Most of the gas, oil & LPG boilers offered by Village Heating have an increased 7 year or 10 year manufacturers warranty. Village Heating offer a 1 year workmanship warranty against all of the work that we carry out. Air Source Heat Pumps generally have a 5 – 7 year manufacturer’s warranty.
How often should I service my boiler, and do you provide servicing?
▼Yes, we do provide boiler servicing and this forms a large and important part of our Village Heating. All boilers, regardless of fuel type should be serviced at least once per year. It is rare that a boiler will require a service more than once a year, typical examples would be an old boiler, a boiler that is used heavily or a boiler brand / model that is known to have issues with certain internal parts.
Can I integrate smart controls or a thermostat with my new boiler?
▼Yes, we offer smart controls that can be used with any boiler or heating system. The better smart controllers are those that are made specifically by the boiler manufacturer to work alongside their own product. An example of this would be a Vaillant gas boiler or Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) and their own sensoHOME or sensoCOMFORT products.
